A cold air intake bolted to an otherwise stock car is not a magic 20 kW. But on a turbocharged BMW — the B58, B48 or an S55/S58 M car — an intake is one of the few genuinely worthwhile hardware mods, as long as you understand what it’s actually for. What a cold air intake actually does

Your BMW’s factory airbox is designed for one job above all others: to be quiet, cheap to produce and emissions-friendly. Making power is a long way down the list. It uses a restrictive filter, tight ducting and a sealed box sized for noise regulations rather than airflow.

A performance cold air intake replaces that with a high-flow filter and smoother, larger-diameter ducting so the turbo can draw more air, more easily. On a turbo engine that matters more than most people realise — the turbo is a pump, and the easier it can breathe on the inlet side, the less it has to fight to make boost. The result is freer airflow, a sharper throttle feel and that unmistakable induction and turbo whoosh under load.

The key word is turbocharged. On an old naturally-aspirated engine, intake gains were tiny and mostly imaginary. On a modern boosted BMW straight-six or four, the intake is a real part of the airflow equation — it just isn’t the whole equation.
