340i Mods: Why the B58 Is the Best Value Performance BMW (and the First 3 to Do)

If you own a BMW 340i, you’re sitting on one of the best-value performance platforms BMW has ever built. The B58 engine underneath responds harder to bolt-on 340i mods than almost anything in its class — and it does it without giving up the daily comfort that made you buy the car in the first place. This guide covers why the B58 is so strong, and the first three upgrades to do, in the order that actually makes sense.

Why the B58 is the sweet spot of modern BMW performance

The B58 is a 3.0-litre single-turbo straight-six that landed in the 340i (F30/F31), 440i (F32/F33), M240i (F22) and later the G20 340i. It’s the same family of engine BMW trusted in the Toyota Supra — which tells you how much headroom the bottom end has from factory.

What makes it the value pick over an M3 or M4:

  • Strong stock internals. The closed-deck block and forged crank handle far more than the factory power figure. You’re not rebuilding the engine to make real gains.
  • It’s choked from the factory. BMW ships the B58 with a restrictive exhaust, a conservative airbox and a tune built for emissions and economy. That restriction is your opportunity — the power is already in there.
  • Daily-friendly. Comfortable, quiet, economical when you want it. You get a usable everyday car that also has serious potential when you do.
  • Cheaper buy-in than an M car. You spend less on the car and put the difference into a build that, on bolt-ons and a tune, gets remarkably close to where you’d want an M car to be.

The short version: a stock 340i is a fast car wearing a restrictor. Most of the first round of “340i mods” is just removing that restriction. If you want the wider rundown, see our guide to the best performance upgrades for the F30 340i.

The first 3 340i mods — in order

Order matters. Do these as a package and each one supports the next. Here’s the sequence and why.

1. Catless downpipe

The factory downpipe with its catalytic converter is the single biggest restriction in the B58’s exhaust. Replacing it with a catless downpipe opens up the turbo’s exit path, lets it spool and breathe, and is the foundation every other mod builds on. Weighing up the cat? We break it down in catless vs catted downpipes.

Our B58 Gen1 Catless Downpipe is a 4.5″ 304 stainless unit that fits 2016–2022 F/G Series B58 cars — M240i, 340i, 440i, 540i and 740i. On its own it wakes up the exhaust note and turbo response; on a tune, it’s where the real numbers come from.

Be honest with yourself on compliance: a catless downpipe removes the cat, so it’s a track / off-road part and not legal for road use in Australia. Factor that into how you plan to run the car.

2. Cold air intake

With the exhaust side opened up, the next restriction is the intake. The factory airbox limits how much air the turbo can draw, especially as things heat up. A cold air intake feeds the turbo more, cooler air, which pairs directly with the downpipe you just fitted.

Our B58 Gen1 Cold Air Intake fits F20/F22/F30/F32 M140i, M240i, 340i and 440i. Fitted alongside the downpipe, it’s the second half of letting the engine actually breathe.

Want both in one go? Our B58 Gen 1 Stage 2 Kit bundles the catless downpipe and cold air intake together for $1,050 — the full hardware foundation in a single order.

3. The tune (this is where it all comes together)

Here’s the part people get wrong: hardware alone leaves most of the gain on the table. The downpipe and intake remove the restrictions, but it’s the tune that tells the engine to use that newly freed-up airflow — more boost, more timing, the works.

On a quality flash tune (MHD or bootmod3 are the two the B58 community runs), a catless downpipe and intake combination typically returns in the order of 20–30 kW over stock — the kind of jump you feel everywhere in the rev range, not just on paper. We put real numbers to it in how much power a B58 downpipe actually adds.

Run them in this order and nothing is wasted: hardware first to remove the restrictions, then the tune to capitalise on them.

FAQ

What are the best first mods for a BMW 340i?

A catless downpipe and a cold air intake, then a flash tune to bring it together. The hardware removes the factory restrictions and the tune uses the freed-up airflow — on a B58 that combination is typically worth around 20–30 kW over stock.

How much power does a B58 downpipe and tune add?

On a B58 340i, a catless downpipe and intake on a quality tune (MHD or bootmod3) generally return in the order of 20–30 kW over stock, along with sharper throttle response and quicker spool.

Is a catless downpipe legal on the road in Australia?

No. A catless downpipe removes the catalytic converter, so it’s a track / off-road part and not legal for road use in Australia. Keep that in mind when planning your build.

Will a B58 downpipe fit my 340i?

Our B58 Gen1 catless downpipe fits 2016–2022 F/G Series B58 cars, including the 340i. If you’re unsure which generation your car is, send us your build date or VIN and we’ll confirm the right part.

Do I need a tune straight away with a downpipe?

You’ll get improved exhaust flow and sound from the downpipe alone, but the meaningful power gain comes from the tune. If the goal is performance, plan to tune once the hardware is on.

The takeaway

The 340i is the value sweet spot of modern BMW performance because the B58 is built to take more than BMW gives it from the factory. Start with a catless downpipe, add a cold air intake, then tune — in that order — and you’ll feel why this platform has the following it does.
