What an upgrade turbo actually changes
Every factory BMW turbo is sized for emissions, response and a warranty period, not for peak power. Once a Stage 2 tune has used up the headroom in the stock unit, the compressor is spinning at the edge of its map, intake temperatures climb and the tune has nowhere to go. A hybrid upgrade turbo keeps the factory housings, so it bolts to the same manifold, oil and water lines, but replaces the internals with a larger billet compressor wheel, a larger turbine wheel and a stronger bearing cartridge. The result is more airflow at the same boost, cooler charge air and a ceiling that moves from the factory 350 to 450 hp range up to 500, 800 or 900 hp depending on the engine.
The trade-off is that a turbo is never a standalone part. It needs fuel, a tune and a professional install, and on a road car it takes the engine well past what the factory drivetrain was signed off for.

B58: the one most people are asking about
The B58 hybrid upgrade turbo is a 6269 unit built for the 6-port B58: 140i, 240i, 340i, 440i, 540i, Z4 M40i and the A90 Supra. It is plug-and-play, reusing the factory oil and water lines, and every unit is VSR balanced by Turbotechnics to under 0.5 g.mm, which is what keeps a big-wheel turbo quiet and long-lived at high shaft speed. Inside is a forged billet mixed-flow compressor wheel, a 310 stainless turbine housing and an uprated K16-series 360 thrust bearing.
It is rated to 800 hp. The Spec 7XX and 8XX options tell you where each configuration sits in that range. Most street builds run well below the ceiling; the top of it is reserved for E85, fuel system work and a built bottom end.
B48: 500 hp from the 2.0-litre
The B48 Stage 2 hybrid turbo is the only part of this range that needs a fitment decision before you order. Early B48 cars (F20, F22, F30, F32, roughly 2016 to 2018) use a 2-port wastegate solenoid; later B48 and B48TU cars (F and G chassis from around 2019, including G20, G22, G26 and G42) use a 4-port solenoid. The turbos are mechanically identical, only the wastegate plug differs, so pick the version that matches your loom. Billet compressor wheel with an extended inducer, ball-bearing cartridge for faster spool and a 304 stainless turbine housing. It is capable of 500 hp at the crank with E85 and supporting mods, which is roughly double what a 330i left the factory with.
N54: the twin-turbo classic
The N54 TD04 V3 billet hybrid twins are sold as a matched pair, with forged billet compressor wheels on journal bearings, component, dynamic and VSR balanced. The kit includes inlets, outlets and the oil feed and return line kit, in left- and right-hand-drive versions. Fitment covers the 135i, 335i and 335i xDrive, 535i, 1M, Z4 35i and the 740i. Twin hybrids are the sensible upgrade for an N54: they keep the factory response character that made the engine famous, and they stay well within what a healthy N54 with the usual supporting mods will take.
N55: one big single
The N55 upgrade turbo is a GTX3582R-style hybrid for the single-turbo N55 in the 335i, 435i, 535i, 640i, M2, M235i and X5/X6 35i. It comes in pneumatic wastegate (PWG) and electronic wastegate (EWG) versions to suit the two N55 generations. The EWG version does not include the actuator; if you need one, ask when you order and we will supply it. This is the turbo for a big-power N55 rather than a mild refresh, so budget for fuelling and a tune built around it.
S55 and S58: Stage 2 twins for the M cars
The S55 Stage 2 upgrade turbochargers keep the OEM housings for a true plug-and-play install on the F80 M3, F82 and F83 M4 and F87 M2 Competition. Billet compressor wheels at 54 mm inducer and 67 mm exducer, larger turbine wheels at 54 mm inducer and 49 mm exducer, on ball-bearing cartridges, rated to 800 hp with supporting mods and a tune.
The S58 Stage 2 upgrade turbochargers do the same for the G80 M3, G82 and G83 M4, G87 M2 and the X3 M and X4 M: OEM housings, billet compressor wheels and larger turbine wheels, capable of supporting 900 plus wheel horsepower with the right fuel and tune. Both sets carry a six-month manufacturer warranty covering defects and are sold for off-road and motorsport use.
What has to go with a turbo
- A tune built for the turbo. A Stage 2 map is not enough. The bootmod3 licence for your engine is the starting point; the map itself is written for the new compressor.
- Fuel. Every figure above assumes supporting fuelling. On the B48 and B58, E85 or a high-pressure fuel pump upgrade is what unlocks the top of the range.
- Downpipe and intake. The turbo cannot breathe through a factory downpipe. If you are starting from stock, do the downpipe and intake first.
- Charge pipe and intercooler. The plastic factory charge pipe on the B58 is the first casualty of more boost. An intercooler keeps the extra air dense on an Australian summer day.

Is a hybrid turbo a bolt-on part?
Mechanically, yes: it uses the factory housings, manifold and lines. Practically, no. It needs a tune written for it, adequate fuel and a professional install before it makes any more power than the stock unit.
How much power does a B58 upgrade turbo make?
The EuroSpec B58 hybrid is rated to 800 hp. Where a given car lands depends on fuel, the supporting mods and the tune written for it; the top of the range needs E85 and fuel system upgrades.
Do I need the 2-port or 4-port B48 turbo?
Check the wastegate solenoid on your car. Early F-chassis B48 cars are 2-port; B48TU and G-chassis cars from around 2019 are 4-port. If you are not sure, send us your VIN and we will confirm.
Are the S55 and S58 turbos road legal?
They are sold for off-road and motorsport use. A car making 800 hp is well outside its factory approval, so treat them as a track or competition upgrade.
