BMW S55 First Mods: Intake, Downpipes and a Top-Mount Intercooler
The S55 in the F80 M3, F82 and F83 M4 and F87 M2 Competition is the best-supported M engine BMW has made, and the first three mods are well settled: a cold air intake, catless downpipes and a top-mount intercooler, tied together with a tune. This guide explains why those three, in what order, what each one does and where the power ends up.
Why these three
The S55 is a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six making 317 kW (425 hp) in the standard M3 and M4, 331 kW (444 hp) in the Competition and 302 kW (405 hp) in the M2 Competition. It is limited from the factory by three things a tune cannot fix on its own: how easily the turbos can breathe in, how easily they can breathe out, and how hot the charge air gets on the way to the engine. The intake, the downpipes and the intercooler each remove one of those limits. Everything after them, from a charge cooler to upgrade turbos, builds on the same foundation.
1. Downpipes: the biggest single gain
Each S55 turbo exhausts through its own factory downpipe with a catalytic converter sitting right at the turbine outlet. That is where the engine is most restricted. The EuroSpec S55 catless race downpipes hold a full 3-inch bore almost the whole length of the pipe rather than necking down near the turbos, in mandrel-bent, TIG-welded 304 stainless with a cast flange. Back-pressure drops, the turbos spool sooner, and once tuned the gain is in the region of 20 to 25 hp and 25 to 30 lb-ft at the wheels, along with a much more aggressive exhaust note. They fit right- and left-hand-drive cars without modification and come with Grade 12 hardware.
Two honest notes. Catless downpipes are for off-road and motorsport use and are not roadworthy on a registered car in Australia. And they need a tune afterwards, both to clear the rear oxygen sensor fault and to realise the gain. Price: $630, in stock in Australia.

Larger capacity than the factory top-mount heat exchanger: less heat soak and more consistent power, run after run. Matched charge pipes come in the kit.

2. Cold air intake: response and sound
The EuroSpec S55 cold air intake replaces the factory airbox with a high-flow induction setup that supports Stage 1 and Stage 2 tune levels. On its own the power gain is small; what you get is sharper throttle response, the induction sound the S55 hides from the factory, and a turbo pair that is no longer working against a restrictive airbox once the tune asks for more. It is a direct OEM-fit replacement and takes under an hour to fit. Price: $500, in stock in Australia.
3. Top-mount intercooler: the one that keeps the power
The S55 uses an air-to-water charge cooler mounted on top of the engine, and the factory core is small. On a hot day, or after two laps, it heat-soaks and the ECU pulls timing; the car makes its dyno number once and then less. The EuroSpec S55 top-mount intercooler is a larger-capacity direct replacement for the factory top-mount heat exchanger. It increases cooling capacity, reduces heat soak and holds a more consistent charge temperature on tuned cars and on track. It does not add a headline number by itself; it stops you losing the numbers the downpipes and tune gave you. Price: $1,100, in stock, direct fit.
The tune that ties it together
All three parts assume a tune. bootmod3 is the usual choice on the S55: a cloud-based flash tune loaded from your phone over the bootmod3 adapter, fully reversible, with off-the-shelf Stage 1 and Stage 2 maps and fuel-specific versions included. The S55 bootmod3 licence is $79 and is issued to your account within one to two business days; the Wi-Fi or OBD adapter is sold separately. Stage 2 is the map written for downpipes, so it is the one this build ends on.
Where the power lands
| Stage | Hardware | Typical result |
|---|---|---|
| Stock | Factory | 425 hp (M3/M4), 444 hp (Competition), 405 hp (M2C) |
| Stage 1 | bootmod3 map, intake | Noticeably stronger mid-range on the factory hardware; the intake adds response and sound |
| Stage 2 | Downpipes, intake, top-mount, Stage 2 map | Typically in the 500 to 550 hp range at the crank on 98 RON, and the top-mount is what lets the car repeat it |
Those are typical results, not promises. Fuel quality, ambient temperature and the individual engine all move the number. What does not move is the order: downpipes first, because they are the biggest restriction; intake second, because it is cheap and pairs with the tune; top-mount third, because once the car makes real power, keeping it is the problem.
— What a catless downpipe does
Faster spool.
Taking out the factory catalytic converter drops back-pressure behind the turbo: faster spool, sharper throttle, more mid-range torque and a harder exhaust note.

Where EuroSpec fits
All three S55 parts are held in stock in Australia and ship in one to two days. EuroSpec downpipes and intake piping carry a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects (air filters excluded). The full range, including the Stage 2 upgrade turbos for later, is in the S55 category. If you would rather do it in one order, tell us your chassis and we will put the three together with the licence.
FAQ
Which S55 mod should I do first?
Downpipes. They remove the biggest restriction and give the largest gain once tuned. Then the intake, then the top-mount intercooler.
Do I need a tune for S55 downpipes?
Yes. Catless downpipes trigger a rear oxygen sensor fault on the factory map and only make their power with a Stage 2 tune.
Will an S55 intake add power on its own?
A little. Its real job is response, sound and letting the turbos breathe once the tune asks for more.
Does the top-mount intercooler add horsepower?
Not on a single cold pull. It stops the car losing power to heat soak, which matters more on an Australian summer day or on track than any peak figure.
Are these mods legal on a road car in Australia?
The intake and intercooler are direct-fit replacements. Catless downpipes and ECU tuning are for off-road and motorsport use and can affect your factory warranty and emissions compliance.
Downpipes, intake, top-mount, tune. That order, and the S55 becomes the car it should have been from the factory. Send us your chassis code and we will confirm fitment before you order.
