What an Upgraded Downpipe Does.
A downpipe is the first piece of exhaust after the turbocharger. On a turbo BMW it is also the most restrictive piece, because the factory unit carries a catalytic converter, a tight bend and a narrow bore within a few centimetres of the turbine outlet. This guide explains what an upgraded downpipe does, what it changes on a B48 or B58, and when it is worth doing.
What the factory downpipe is doing to your turbo
A turbocharger makes power from the pressure difference across the turbine. Exhaust gas pushes in from the manifold, spins the wheel and needs to leave as freely as possible. Anything that slows it down on the way out raises back-pressure, and back-pressure does three things you do not want: it makes the turbine work harder to spin, it holds heat in the turbo and it limits how much boost the engine can run before exhaust temperatures climb.
The factory BMW downpipe puts a 400-cell catalytic converter right at the turbine outlet, inside a cast housing with a sharp turn to clear the subframe. It is built to meet cold-start emissions targets, not to flow. On a stock tune it is adequate. Once the map asks for more boost, it becomes the bottleneck.
What an upgraded downpipe changes
An aftermarket downpipe replaces that section with a larger, smoother pipe. The EuroSpec units are 3-inch 304 stainless, TIG-welded and mandrel-bent so the bore stays constant through the bend. Two versions exist:
- Catless. No converter at all. Maximum flow, the loudest note and the largest gains. Off-road and motorsport use only; it will not pass an emissions test and is not roadworthy on a registered car in Australia.
- High-flow catted. A 200-cell metallic converter in place of the factory 400-cell ceramic unit. Most of the flow benefit, a cleaner tailpipe and far less smell at idle. The usual choice for a daily-driven build.
Either way, the effects are the same in kind and differ in degree:
- Lower back-pressure. The turbine spools sooner and holds boost more easily at the top of the rev range.
- Lower exhaust gas temperature. Heat leaves the turbo faster, which is what lets a tuner run more timing and more boost safely.
- Sharper response. Less lag between throttle input and boost, which you feel before you see it on a dyno sheet.
- Sound. The muted factory note becomes a proper turbo six or four. Catless is noticeably louder than catted.
How much power does it add?
Be careful with the numbers you read online. A downpipe on its own, with no tune, adds little because the factory map still targets factory boost. The gains come when a tune is loaded that takes advantage of the extra flow. On a B58 with a Stage 2 bootmod3 map, an upgraded downpipe is typically worth 25 to 35 hp over the same tune on the factory pipe. On a B48 expect 25 to 30 hp with a tune. Combined Stage 2 figures of 50 to 100 wheel horsepower over stock that you see quoted are the total for tune plus downpipe plus intake, not the downpipe alone.
What every owner notices, tuned or not, is the response. The engine feels lighter under the foot, and the boost comes in earlier in the rev range.
Fitment on the B48 and B58
The B58 downpipe fits Gen 1 and Gen 2 engines: the 340i, M240i, 440i, 540i, X3 M40i and the A90 Supra. The B48 downpipe fits the 320i, 330i, 230i, 430i and their xDrive equivalents. Both EuroSpec pipes are built for Australian right-hand-drive cars, bolt to the factory flange with the supplied gasket and hardware, and reuse the factory oxygen sensor positions. Installation is around two hours on a hoist.
A catless pipe will trigger a rear oxygen sensor fault on the factory map. A tune removes that, which is another reason the downpipe and the tune are best done together.

Do I need a tune with an upgraded downpipe?
For the power gain, yes. For the response and sound, no. A catless pipe on a stock map will also throw a check-engine light for the rear oxygen sensor, which a tune clears.
Is a catless downpipe legal in Australia?
No. Removing a catalytic converter from a registered road car is not roadworthy in any state. Catless pipes are sold for off-road and motorsport use. A high-flow catted pipe is the road-going option.
Will a downpipe make my car louder?
Yes. A catted pipe adds a deeper note at idle and under load. A catless pipe is markedly louder and can drone at highway speed on a car with a stock rear muffler.
