5 Reasons to Upgrade Your B58 Downpipe and Intake Systems

The B58 in the 340i, M240i, 540i and Supra is one of the strongest factory engines BMW has built, and it leaves a lot on the table in stock form. The two parts that unlock it are the downpipe and the intake. Here are five reasons they are the first two B58 modifications worth doing, and how to do them in the right order.

1. The factory downpipe is the bottleneck

The B58’s stock downpipe carries a 400-cell catalytic converter inside a cast elbow directly after the turbine. It restricts flow, holds heat in the turbo and raises back-pressure as boost rises. Replace it with a 3-inch stainless pipe and the turbine spools sooner, exhaust temperatures fall and the tune has headroom to add boost and timing. On a Stage 2 map, an upgraded downpipe is typically worth 25 to 35 hp over the same tune on the factory pipe.

2. The intake feeds the turbo cooler, denser air

The factory airbox is a compromise between noise regulations and space. A performance cold air intake gives the turbo a larger filter area, a smoother path to the compressor and air drawn from outside the engine bay rather than from above a hot engine. On its own the gain is modest, a few horsepower and a better induction note. Together with a downpipe and a tune it lets the turbo make its boost with less effort, which shows up as steadier power across the rev range and lower intake temperatures on a hot day.

3. Response improves before the dyno figure does

Power numbers get the attention, but the change you feel first is response. Less back-pressure means the turbo reacts to the throttle faster, and boost arrives earlier in the rev range. A B58 with a downpipe and intake feels lighter and more urgent at part throttle, which is where you spend most of your time on the road.

4. They are what a Stage 2 tune is built for

Tuning stages exist because the map has to match the hardware. Stage 1 is a tune on stock parts. Stage 2 assumes a downpipe and intake, and it is the stage where the B58 becomes a genuinely quick car: the combination is typically worth 60 to 80 wheel horsepower over stock on 98 RON. Buying the downpipe and intake first means the tune can be loaded once, at Stage 2, rather than paid for twice.

5. They hold their value and their fitment

Both parts bolt to factory mounting points and can be removed and sold on if you change cars. Neither requires cutting, welding or a fabricator. A stainless downpipe will outlast the car. That makes them the lowest-risk money you can spend on a B58, and the parts you will not have to buy twice when you go further later with an intercooler or an upgrade turbo.

The right order

  1. Downpipe. The single biggest restriction. Do this first.
  2. Intake. Cheap to fit and pairs with the downpipe.
  3. Stage 2 tune. bootmod3 is the usual choice for the B58. This is where the power arrives.
  4. Charge pipe. The plastic factory pipe is the part that cracks once boost is up. Replace it when you tune.
  5. Intercooler, then turbo. Later, if you want more than Stage 2.

Where EuroSpec fits

EuroSpec holds the B58 catless downpipe in stock in Australia at $550, alongside the B58 intakes in the intakes category and the charge pipes in the charge pipes category. Everything is built for Australian right-hand-drive cars and ships within days rather than weeks. Catless pipes are for off-road and motorsport use; a high-flow catted version is the road-legal option.

FAQ

Which comes first, the downpipe or the intake?

The downpipe. It removes the biggest restriction. The intake is the easier second step.

Do I need a tune for a B58 downpipe and intake?

For the full gain, yes. Without a tune you get the response and the sound, and a catless pipe will show a rear oxygen sensor fault until a tune clears it.

Will a downpipe and intake fit a Gen 2 B58?

Yes. The EuroSpec B58 downpipe fits Gen 1 and Gen 2, which covers the 340i and M340i, the M240i, the 540i, the X3 M40i and the A90 Supra. Check the intake listing for the generation-specific version.

How much power does a Stage 2 B58 make?

On 98 RON, a Stage 2 B58 with downpipe and intake is typically in the 420 to 450 hp range at the crank, from a factory rating of 285 to 340 hp depending on the model.

Start with the downpipe, add the intake, then tune. Browse the range, or send us your chassis code and we will confirm fitment before you order.
