7 Body Mods That Boost Your Car’s Aerodynamics and Keep It Cool
Body modifications are usually judged on looks, but the good ones do a job. On a turbocharged car the two jobs that matter are managing air over the body at speed and getting heat out of the engine bay. Here are seven body mods that improve aerodynamics and cooling, what each one actually does, and which are worth it on a road car.
1. Front lip and splitter
A lip or splitter extends the lower edge of the front bumper. It stops air spilling under the car, where it would lift the nose at speed, and pushes it around the sides instead. On the road the benefit is stability above 100 km/h and a small drag reduction. It also keeps the airflow through the lower grille cleaner, which matters if there is an intercooler behind it.
2. Rear diffuser
A diffuser lets the air under the car expand gradually as it leaves the rear, which lowers the pressure under the floor and pulls the car down without adding drag the way a wing does. A real diffuser needs a reasonably flat floor ahead of it to work; a cosmetic one bolted under a stock bumper does very little. On a track car it is one of the most effective changes per dollar.
3. Rear spoiler or wing
A boot-lip spoiler cleans up the airflow leaving the roof and reduces lift on the rear axle. A proper wing generates downforce, and with it drag. For a road car a subtle lip spoiler is the honest choice: it helps stability and costs almost nothing in fuel. A tall wing on a street car adds drag without the speed to use the downforce.
4. Vented bonnet
An engine bay is a box of hot air with a radiator blowing into it. Vents in the bonnet let that hot air escape rather than stagnate, which lowers under-bonnet temperature and, on a turbo car, intake temperature with it. This is the mod with the clearest cooling benefit. The trade-off is water ingress, so place vents where they drain away from electronics and the air filter.
5. Side skirts
Side skirts stop high-pressure air from the sides of the car from being drawn under the floor. That keeps the underbody pressure low, which helps the diffuser do its work, and reduces turbulence along the sills. On their own the effect is small; as part of a lip, skirts and diffuser set they make the other parts work better.
6. Ducted front bumper and brake ducts
A bumper with real ducting sends air where it is needed: to the intercooler, the radiator and the brakes. Brake ducts in particular are worth doing on a car that sees track days, because brake fade is a heat problem and a duct is the cheapest fix. Look for openings that lead somewhere; a bumper with decorative mesh over a blank panel adds nothing.
7. Lightweight panels
Carbon or aluminium bonnets, boot lids and bumpers remove weight from the ends of the car, which helps how it turns and stops. They are not an aerodynamic change in themselves. They earn their place on a track car; on a road car the cost per kilogram is high and the gain is mostly in how the car feels.

- Front lip and boot-lip spoiler: the cheapest stability gain, and they look right on an M Sport car.
- Vented bonnet or ducted bumper if the car is tuned and sees hot days.
